Update 5 – 20/10/17

Callum still remains asleep for most of each day, with only very brief periods of wakefulness, where very occasionally he’ll nod to a question or squeeze a hand. We’ve been told that sleep is exactly what Callum needs right now, as that is the time when his brain can repair itself best. We were also told that when he has roused himself, he may not know that he’s awake and could easily confuse it with still dreaming. The doctors have advised having a calm and consistent atmosphere at his bedside as possible, and not to have too many people visiting him and stimulating him to respond.
The infection that he’s been fighting off for the last while looks like it is finally being beaten back by the antibiotics that he was given, which will free up his body to focus on recovering from the accident. This has also meant that a smaller aperture can be fitted to his tracheostomy allowing him to breathe more using his mouth, and with air passing over his vocal cords he’ll have the ability to speak when that time arrives.

Although the outward signs of Callum’s recovery seem to have slowed, there are so many small and crucial changes happening beneath the surface as his body works tirelessly to heal itself. All these small steps will eventually lead add up to big ones, and we all must have patience whilst we wait for those to come. This, of course, is much easier said than done and is something I struggle with myself. All of us so desperately want him to come back to us, and for this terrible period of uncertainty to pass.

Thank you all again, for your kindness and compassion.

    Hi Pete,

Four of us from Brooks are planning to drive up mid December for a part of the day. We anticipating interaction – just want to be present with him for a period of time.

Do you think it’s too soon for that – given your feedback from the doctors in your last update?

    Thanks man x
